There is nothing better than bottomless brunch. Whether it is bottomless food, bottomless cocktails or bottomless prosecco, I’m all for it. So I was instantly interested when I heard that American steakhouse, Smith & Wollensky, had launched Sundae Sessions, a bottomless ice cream offering.
Bottomless ice cream and unlimited toppings for 60 minutes available every Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am – 3.30pm. It sounded like the perfect Sundae afternoon treat to me…
The upmarket steakhouse, which is located just off of the Strand next to the art deco Aldephi building, is part of a small American steakhouse chain and opened in London a few years ago. The names, Smith & Wollensky, were randomly chosen from a New York City phone book!
There is a sense of grandeur as soon as you walk through the door. The immediate service and decor is impressive. We entered the restaurant to a warm welcome and were swiftly shown to our table.
Smith & Wollensky boasts a striking art deco interior design, with shades of emerald green and dark wood panelling – you may even recognise it if you watched Fleabag.
Even the team’s uniforms are impressive…
Smith & Wollensky has an extensive wine menu with lots of great options by the glass, including a few from Sonoma which I was really impressed by. We wanted to try something different and plumped for the a Grüner Veltliner by Ebner-Ebenauer, an Austrian wine priced at £14.50 for a medium glass. A dry, medium-bodied wine with flavours of apple, it paired perfectly with our ice cream.
Then it was time for the bottomless ice cream sundae bar. We were able to choose from a variety of wonderful flavours including the favourites – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry – plus a few more interesting flavours such as banana and butterscotch, peach melba and lemon meringue. So of course, we tried all six and piled on the toppings…
The Sundae Sessions table offers a variety of toppings including S&W wafers, homemade honeycomb, peanut brittle, popcorn, jelly beans, raspberry marshmallows, fresh berries, and sauces including chocolate, strawberry, fudge and salted caramel sauce.
We weren’t the best at making our ice cream look very ‘instagramable’…
but we did give it a try…
We managed to get through six scoops each before we realised our eyes were bigger than our bellies. The variety of toppings were amazing, I loved the peanut brittle the most and was happy there were a few fruit options so I didn’t feel too guilty. Although the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream was perfect – so smooth, creamy and flavoursome – my favourite flavour had to be the banana and butterscotch with the lemon meringue as a runner up – so creamy yet so refreshing.
Sundae Sessions costs £9 for adults and £5 for children – adults will receive three scoops of ice cream and children two, which they can load up with their favourite toppings. But I would recommend going for the bottomless option where you can eat as much ice cream as you like for 60 minutes priced at £15 for adults and £9 for children up to the age of 12.
