You’ve probably seen Elan Cafe, Saint Aymes, Sketch and Peggy Porschen’s all over your Instagram feed. So how about something a bit different? The Bloom Room at P.F. Chang’s Asian Table in Covent Garden is an Instagramers heaven and it is open until 30 April 2018.
To celebrate the start of spring and the Japanese Sakura flower, known as the cherry blossom, P.F. Chang’s has opened this beautiful floral pop-up to give diners the chance to experience Hanami – the Japanese tradition of flower viewing.
The entire ground floor has been transformed into a cherry blossom and Instagramers haven and even offers Instagramable pink cocktails and desserts! It’s an elegant and luxurious space, so we started the night right with a very lavish Cherry Blossom-inspired cocktail each – the Sakura Dream (£12), a heavenly mix of vodka, pink grapefruit juice, guava juice and lemongrass.
I had first heard about P.F. Chang’s during trips to the US and Dubai last year but didn’t get to try it, so I was really excited to hear that they had now opened a branch in London – the first in Europe! However the London branch is named P.F. Chang’s Asian Table (which is different to the US and Dubai). This name is inspired by co-founder, Philip Chiang’s dining table where he shared great times with family, friends and loved ones. Gathering around the table, they would eat and share as life passed them by. This is reflected in the high end yet casual dining experience concept with food that is designed to be shared, allowing for groups to experience each taste, texture and emotion together, as well as celebrating Philip’s love for art, music and food. I felt that the London branch had a more upmarket vibe compared to its other restaurants.
For starters we enjoyed Vegetable spring rolls (£4.25 for 2 pieces) stuffed with julienne veggies with sweet chili dipping sauce, and Pan seared pork dumpling (£8.50) drizzled with soy & chili mash. Dumplings are my absolutely favourite so these went down well and the soy and chili mash really enhanced the flavour of the dish overall. After our dinner we found out that P.F. Chang’s is known for its dynamite shrimp, so I’ll have to return to try it out as starter next time!
P.F. Chang’s Asian Table prides itself on using simple, locally sourced ingredients and traditional techniques. Each dish is delicately dressed and made from scratch, living by their ‘farm to wok’ philosophy. A team of dedicated chefs head up the kitchen, producing signature lunch and dinner dishes fusing Japanese, Chinese and Korean cuisine.
For my main course, I opted for the Grilled Asian spiced salmon, served on asparagus with red pepper slaw (£14.25). A fresh and flavoursome dish which I would highly recommend, the salmon was so slightly spiced so it’s perfect even for those who aren’t fans of spicy dishes. I went for a side of Lo Mein noodles (£3.95) – which are wok-seared egg noodles tossed with savoury soy sauce. A very tasty dish which I thoroughly enjoyed albeit a bit plain, I did think that it could have some with some veg mixed in.
My guest went for the Honey chicken (£9.25) – lightly battered chicken in a sweet and tangy honey sauce with spring onions over a bed of crispy rice sticks. The perfect dish for those with a sweet tooth and who may usually got for sweet and sour when ordering Chinese cuisine. Everything was so reasonably priced, especially for its central location being close to Covent Garden, Chinatown and Leicester Square.
The desserts in the The Bloom Room could not be missed, we ordered both desserts on the menu – Cherry Blossom cheesecake (£7.50), a delicious dessert with hints of citrus, rose and cherry blossom, and the Pink Paradise (£7), a large French macaroon filled with fresh raspberries and a gorgeous matcha ganache served with rose ice cream. The Pink Paradise was my favourite of the two, not only was it so pretty it was also so tasty. I was really impressed with the rose ice cream which had an delicate floral taste which wasn’t too overpowering.
P.F. Chang’s is an Instagramers dream, which serves up top quality Asian cuisine with a contemporary European twist. What’s not to love?
