For a quintessentially British evening check out The Ship Tavern Holborn.
London is surrounded in rich history and its pub and restaurants are no exception. I recently visited The Ship Tavern in Holborn to review the upstairs Dining Room.
The Ship Tavern is a culinary jewel tucked away in a little alley away just a minute away from Holborn Underground station so it’s really easy to reach. It was established in 1549 and the original Tavern was half the size that it is today. It has featured in many haunted publications on London…quite glad I found this out after my visit. Luckily we didn’t experience anything spooky during our visit!
At the side of the pub is a door way straight up to The Dining Room. (Downstairs is your typical pub area)
For an early Monday evening the Dining Room was busy full of diners. Looking at everyones dishes I couldn’t wait to tuck in.
To start we went for Crumbed & deep fried brie with rocket leaves and cranberry sauce (£8) and Seared scallops with garden pee purée, crispy pancetta & blackberry (£11).
As a cheese fanatic, I easily devoured the crumbed and deep fried brie to myself, it was incredible and so tasty with the cranberry sauce. The scallops were beautifully presented and cooked to perfection – the food here is the finest pub grub you’ll get in London.
The Dining Room is so quintessentially British and a brilliant place to take those who are visiting London for a traditional British experience. I loved the stereotypical vintage pub style red curtains and candles and lamps which glowed around the room.
For the main course my guest ordered the Caramelised French onion & goat’s cheese tart grilled summer berries, balsamic glaze, mixed leaves (£14) and I tried the Trio of lamb (braised lamb shoulder, lamb fillet, crisp belly) (£19).
The trio of lamb was tender with a tasty rich sauce, the portion was extremely generous so you definitely feel as though you are getting your moneys worth. The dish came served with mashed potato,
garden pea & mint purée, roasted vine tomatoes and mint oil. The mint flavours were perfect with a lovely mint aroma which wasn’t too overpowering.
I was tempted by the goats cheese tart which my guest ordered. The strawberries paired really well with the goat cheese, balsamic vinegar and rocket, the combined flavours creating an absolutely delicious dish. The only negative is that there was probably a bit too much goats cheese which can get a bit much after a while.
We managed to make room for dessert so that we could try the Pistachio & almond sponge, pistachio ice cream, Pistachio praline (£7) and Passion fruit pannacotta with raspberry coulis (£7).
The pistachio cake was incredible, when it arrived the cake was still warm but greedy me wished the portion was slightly larger! Maybe I devoured this too quick but I’m not exactly sure where the pistachio praline came into it but despite that it was an amazing dessert which I would highly recommend ordering.
The passion fruit pannacotta was fresh and flavoursome and the perfect palate cleanser.
The Ship Tavern is Holborn’s best kept secret. It’s full of history and British charm with its red and polished oak panelled decor. It’s cute, cosy and comfy. We had such a chilled out, relaxed dinner and the staff were wonderful.
Although not the cheapest of pubs in London I feel it was totally worth it. The food is freshly made with seasonal produce and it is top notch grub. It’s definitely one of the best pub meals you will have in London.
